Monday, September 5, it is time to cross the border for the last time back into Washington. Ferndale was a quiet little town that we have decided to spend a week in for some rest and relaxation. We have had a very busy week, and now it is time to kick back and just be.
The weather continues to be picture perfect. Mount Baker is in the near distance and is a very prominent feature of the landscape. We have decided to stir our bones and take a drive to the end of the road that ascends the mountain.
Along the way we come upon a turnoff to Nooksack Falls. Only a short distance off the main road, we turn in to explore.
One wonders whether we should risk it!
Oh, yeah! There is a huge fence to keep the idjits back from the precipice. The falls are really nice.
The rock divide causes a spectacular display.
Moving on up the road, we reach the end where the ski area is. The facilities appear to be closed for the summer, but it looks like it would be a very popular place come the first good snow.
There are a lot of beautiful photo ops in these parts.
These glaciers are part of the snow that we were seeing down in the valley. The main peak is around behind this one. The road doesn’t go there, and we can’t see it from here. Darn!
Moving in with the telephoto on the peak.
This has been a good outing. It’s time to head on down.
Back at the RV we have become friends with our neighbors from Maine. Fred and Sue are usually out doing their RV travel in the winter and back in Maine in the summer, but this year they decided to do Alaska. We have enjoyed their company. They are headed for Arizona. Maybe we will have a chance to get together with them again. That would be really fun.
The little town of Ferndale puts on a 5K run in remembrance of 9/11. The flag hanging between the two ladder trucks is the start and finish of the race. At noon after the race there will be a memorial service at the finish line.
When I drove into town to go for my walk early this morning, I was met with the display of flags. The Stars and Stripes lined the street on both sides all the way through town. It is pretty impressive!
This is a great way to end our restful stay in this quiet little town. I like Ferndale. The folks are friendly here and the town has just about everything you need. It is a good place to just be. Life is good.
